Glen Soderholm

A Vision for Vibrant Worship

Music

Glen is an experienced singer/songwriter/performer who has recorded six CD’s of mostly original music and entertained many audiences over the last thirty years. His songs have been recorded and used by other artists and congregations in a variety of settings around the world.

Glen is also an inspired worship leader who has led diverse  gatherings of Christian worshipers in many contexts over the years. Glen’s music is a rich blend of thoughtful lyrics, inspired singing, and excellent craftsmanship. He often plays solo, but occasionally  incorporates exceptional musical accompanists to enhance the event.

His honest, warm, and inspiring performances create an openness for encounter with the living God.

“Glen Soderholm is a sophisticated musician and a gifted communicator who is exceptionally good at his craft. He is that sort of follower of Jesus who reminds you what discipleship ought to look like. He provokes thought, invokes reflection, and, in my case at least, stokes some spiritual fires that desperately need stoking. Highly recommended.”
Carolyn Arends Musician/Author

“I complain a lot about the state of Christian music today – shallow lyrics, trite music, lack of theological substance, lack of concern for justice or “big issues,” mediocre creativity. Glen Soderholm doesn’t just complain – he does something about it. He writes music that is strong in exactly the places so much music is weak. I highly recommend him – an artist in the tradition of Bruce Cockburn, Steve Bell, David Wilcox, and other songwriting masters.”

Do Not Be Afraid

Do Not Be Afraid (2010)

Do not be afraid is Glen’s sixth recording and it celebrates the seasons of Advent, Nativity, and Epiphany.
It’s a reflection upon the Incarnation through interpretations of some well-known and more obscure carols, selected covers, and four originals.

This Bright Sadness

This Bright Sadness (2008)

Here Glen forges a lean and rootsy sound that features his emotional singing and incisive lyrics. The theme of the recording is lament and hope found in the mystery of suffering as he reflects on the loss of several family members. Standout tracks include ‘Out of Nothing’, a stripped down version of Bob Dylan’s ‘Everything is Broken’, and ‘These are the Ones’ – a haunting elegy for the people of Ethiopia, co-written with Steve Bell.

World Without End (2006)

When God’s people gather to worship, it is always a participation in something that is already going on – that is, the life of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That grand narrative gathers up every season of the human soul, hence the title, songs for the Seasons of worship. This worship album features an eclectic mix of songs including Glen’s reinterpretations of six hymns and six originals. This is also an enhanced CD featuring lead sheets and commentary.

Rest (2003)

This album returns to a more organic, acoustic sound with Roy Salmond still at the producers helm. In this collection we find some of the worship songs which Glen had written for his congregations when he was a pastor. They are built around the theme of resting in the faithful care and grace of God in the midst of a busy and driven world. Canadian singer/songwriter Carolyn Arends contributes some exquisite background vocals.

By Faint Degrees (2000) (Available only as digital download)

Glen’s second recording was produced by the well-known Canadian producer Roy Salmond. It continues the lyrical themes on the struggles of discipleship begun in the first album, but always returns to the hope that is found in the triune God of grace. Musically this album moves towards a slightly more sophisticated pop/folk sound, with the outstanding rhythm section of Ben Riley and Fergus Marsh (both associated with Bruce Cockburn amongst others). Salmond contributes a variety of instruments himself, bringing more keyboards into the mix, and Glen’s overall sound is more mature on this recording. It concludes with the standout hymn to Christ ‘Our Great High Priest’.

In the Belly of the Fish (1997)

‘Belly’ is Glen’s first recording and was released in the Spring of 1997. This album contains 9 original songs and two covers which capture Glen’s observations of the human condition through the eyes of faith. The sound is a folky blend of acoustic stringed instruments with some creative rhythms and tasty harmonies supplied by Steve Bell and Jo-Ann Dell. Stand out tracks include Psalm 121 (recorded later by Steve Bell) a lament for Glen’s friend Chris Vais, Abba’s Child, and the title track.
